Salerno to Positano Ferry — straight to the beach in the middle of town.
Seventy minutes along the whole coastline, and it docks at Spiaggia Grande at the bottom of Positano. No road reaches the centre, so in season the boat gets you closer to your hotel than a car does — for a fraction of the price.

Positano is a staircase, and that changes the usual logic completely.
Positano is built down a cliff with the through road along the top. Cars, taxis and transfers all stop up there, and you walk down — frequently several hundred steps — then climb back up when you leave.
The ferry arrives at Spiaggia Grande, the main beach at the bottom of town. If your hotel sits in the lower half, the boat physically puts you nearer the door than a €150 transfer does. Add the fact that the SS163 is gridlocked all summer while the sea is empty, and the choice makes itself.
The crossing itself is the other argument: seventy minutes along the entire coastline, past Vietri, Cetara, Maiori, Minori and Amalfi. People pay for boat tours to see exactly this.
Six things worth knowing before you go.
Mostly about timing, and one about the swell.
Season: roughly April to October. Outside it there is no scheduled service and the road is the only way.
Piers: Salerno boats leave from Molo Manfredi or Molo Concordia depending on operator — check your ticket, they are a walk apart.
Weather: a rough forecast cancels sailings, usually with a full refund but not much notice. Do not build a non-refundable hotel night at the far end around one boat.
Last departure: earlier than dinner. If you plan to eat in Positano, plan how you are getting back before you sit down.
Luggage: fine for a day trip, awkward for moving hotels — there are steps at both ends.
Round trip: a Salerno–Amalfi–Positano return ticket exists at about $51 if you want both towns in one day.
