Salerno — Molo Manfredi — 10-Min Briefing — Your Own Route — Vietri · Amalfi · Positano — Back by Evening
This one isn't a guided tour — it's your own boat for the day. Angel Boat Rental hands you the keys at Salerno's Molo Manfredi, gives you a ten-minute safety briefing, and lets you loose along the Amalfi Coast: no licence required, no fixed itinerary, anchor where you like and swim when you want. It's priced per boat (from $217 for up to five people), so split between friends it's one of the cheapest ways onto this water — and rated a flat ★5.0 across 85 verified bookings.
Booked via GetYourGuide · Instant confirmation · Free cancellation up to 24 hrs · Reserve now & pay later · Priced per boat for the whole group · Fuel extra, paid on site
Every other boat trip from Salerno runs to someone else's clock — set stops, a full boat of strangers, a guide's route. This is the opposite: they give you the keys and the coastline is yours for the day. Steer to Vietri and Cetara, push on to Amalfi and Positano, cut the engine in a cove no tour bothers with and dive off the ladder into water that's clearest away from the crowds. At $217 for the boat it looks dear next to a $57 shared cruise — until you remember it seats five. Divided among a group, it's the cheapest and freest way onto this sea, and 85 travellers have handed it a perfect ★5.0.
You meet Angel Boat Rental at Via Molo Manfredi, Salerno's commercial harbour — the same wharf the cruise ships use, which is why reviewers keep mentioning they stepped off the ship almost straight onto the boat. The staff run through the documents, the boat, and a ten-minute safety briefing, hand you the keys, and that's it: the coast is yours. There's no guide aboard, no headset, no schedule. One traveller summed the mood up perfectly — "we were at our own pace, enjoying the fresh breeze and the cleanest water, stopping at some points for just sunbathing or diving."
From Molo Manfredi you point west past Vietri sul Mare, the ceramic town where the Amalfi Coast begins, then on toward Cetara, Amalfi and — if you time it and the sea is kind — Positano. The freedom is the whole point: anchor in a quiet cove, drop the ladder, snorkel over the rocks, then move on when you please. Bring your own cooler of drinks and snacks (the operator provides ice and one is often supplied); several reviewers packed lunch and moored off a beach to eat.
The honest caveats are the flip side of that freedom. You're driving, so a little boating sense helps — the navigation area is busy, and if you're unsure the €100 on-site skipper is money well spent. Fuel is extra, paid at the end for what you used. And it's a long day — nine hours all in — so pack sun cover (there's an awning, but plan for the open sun), water and a plan for how far you realistically want to go. Get those right and you've got the review everyone leaves: "our favorite day on the Amalfi Coast, hands down."
Read the pricing basis carefully. This rental and the two private charters below are priced per boat for the whole group — so they only make sense split between four or five people. The sunset cruise is the odd one out, charged per person ($57 each), which is far cheaper for a couple. This rental is the only self-drive option: cheapest per boat, but you're the captain (or you pay €100 for a skipper).

Pulled from the 85 reviews, the operator's fine print and how licence-free boating actually works in Italy.
Eighty-five reviews and a flat ★5.0 is a strong record, and the theme underneath it is the operator, not just the boat. Angela and the Angel Boat Rental family get named again and again — "attentive and patient," "so friendly and made sure we had the best time," staff who "explained everything and even gave you tips for restaurants." For a self-drive rental where you're on your own once you leave the dock, that hand-over matters, and reviewers consistently say it's done well: clean, well-maintained boats and clear instructions.
The second theme is the freedom. This is the review nobody writes about a group cruise: "we were at our own pace," "stopping at secluded beaches and enjoying the bluest waters," "the best part of our trip." Several travellers off cruise ships flagged how convenient the Molo Manfredi base is — the boat and check-in are right by the berth. The honest, useful notes are in the detail: one recommends a nautical GPS app for finding somewhere to moor for lunch, another confirms a cooler was provided for their own drinks.
Who should think twice — and the reviews are unusually candid here. If you've never driven a boat, don't wing it: one traveller wrote "we didn't have experience so ended up getting a skipper, which was easily arranged" (and added that gas wasn't in the price but was reasonable). And if you're a couple rather than a group, the per-boat $217 is a lot for two — the $57-per-person sunset cruise is the cheaper way onto the water. But for a group of friends who want the coast to themselves, at their own pace, this is the freest day out from Salerno — and the reviews back that without exception.
We had the most amazing day on the water exploring the Amalfi Coast including Positano and Amalfi from the boat! Definitely the best way of seeing all the beautiful scenery and jumping in crystal-clear waters and exploring the different coves. It was super convenient being on a cruise that docked right next to the boat and check-in station. All their staff is so nice too!
The boat rental was the HIGHLIGHT of our trip. They gave us instructions on arrival and documents to keep on the boat so both sides were insured. We were at our own pace, enjoying the fresh breeze and the cleanest water, stopping to sunbathe or dive. They had everything needed: ice, clean water to shower and a great clean boat we could drive ourselves. 10/10.
One of the most incredible experiences! Got to see the Amalfi Coast from the water, which was so unique. Lots of great swimming spots. We didn't have experience so ended up getting a skipper, which was easily arranged. Gas was also not included in the price but quite reasonable for the entire day. Angela and her family were so friendly.
All of the staff at Angel Boat were really friendly and helpful. Boats were clean and well maintained, instructions on operating the boat clear. It would be nice to have a better map on where to moor if you want to stop for lunch along the Amalfi Coast, but a nautical GPS app helps a lot. Overall, a great experience!
Staff explained everything and even gave you tips for restaurants. It was an unforgettable day sailing along the Amalfi Coast. I would thoroughly recommend Angel Boat Rental.
Very easy process and an unreal day out! They even provided a cooler for our own beverages. Amazing job.

Correct — no nautical licence is required. Under Italian law you can pilot a small boat like this (engine power capped around 40 HP, within a few miles of the coast) without one. Some boating sense is expected, though, because the navigation area is busy. If you've never driven a boat, add a skipper on site for €100.
Per boat. From $217 covers the whole boat for up to 5 people — so it's excellent value split among a group, and pricey for one or two. For a couple, the $57-per-person sunset cruise is usually cheaper.
No — fuel is extra and paid on site for what you actually use during the day. Reviewers describe the amount as "quite reasonable" for a full day on the water, but budget for it separately from the rental price.
Yes. A professional skipper can be added for €100, paid on site at Molo Manfredi. It's the sensible choice if you have no boating experience; reviewers who did it say it was "easily arranged" on the day.
At Angel Boat Rental, Via Molo Manfredi, in Salerno's commercial harbour — right by the cruise berth, which makes it very convenient for cruise passengers. Bring your passport or ID card for the paperwork. There's no hotel pickup.
About 9 hours in total — a roughly 10-minute safety briefing plus around 8 hours on the water. Starting times vary, so check the live availability calendar for your date. It's a full day out, not a short cruise.
Yes — reviewers regularly reach both, along with Vietri, Cetara and the coves in between. That said, they're a fair run west of Salerno, so plan a realistic loop and leave time to get back rather than trying to see the entire coast in one day.
It's a small open boat, so rough sea can shorten or cancel the day. You have free cancellation up to 24 hours before for a full refund, and reserve-now-pay-later means you're not out of pocket while you watch the forecast.
Want a skipper, a shorter trip or the coast at sunset? These three are the closest alternatives — all on the Sunset & Private Boats guide. Note the sunset cruise is priced per person; the two private charters are per boat.
