Private Transfer from Salerno to Positano — and the stairs nobody warns you about.
The ferry lands you on the beach in the middle of town. The car stops on the road at the top, and you walk down with your bags. That single fact decides this choice more often than price does — here is the full comparison.
Nobody drives into Positano — including your driver.
The town is a staircase. Where the car stops is not where your hotel is.
Positano is built down a cliff, and the through road sits at the top. A private transfer drops you on that road, or at the Sponda / Chiesa Nuova stops. From there you walk down — sometimes several hundred steps — and at the end of your stay you walk back up with the same suitcases. Hotels lower down send a porter or a small electric cart, but you should ask before you book, not after.
The ferry, by contrast, arrives at Spiaggia Grande, the main beach at the bottom of town. If your hotel is in the lower half, the boat literally puts you closer to the door than a car can. This is the opposite of how it works almost everywhere else, and it is why the usual "car is more convenient" logic breaks down here.
When the transfer still makes sense.
Three cases, and they are not the ones you would guess.
Winter. Scheduled boats run roughly April to October. Outside that, the coast road is the only way in.
Odd hours. The last ferry back to Salerno leaves earlier than most dinners finish. A car does not have a timetable.
A hotel high up. If you are staying near Chiesa Nuova or above, the car drops you close and the ferry means a long climb. Check your hotel’s altitude before you decide — on this stretch of coast that matters more than distance.

How do I get from Salerno to Positano?
By ferry in about 70 minutes from April to October, arriving at Spiaggia Grande in the centre of town. By road it is roughly an hour and a quarter by private transfer, SITA bus or taxi — and the only option from November to March when the boats stop.
Can a car drop me at my hotel in Positano?
Usually not. The through road runs along the top of the town and most hotels sit below it down flights of steps. Drivers stop at the road or the Sponda and Chiesa Nuova points. Ask your hotel about a porter or cart before you book a transfer.
Is the ferry or a transfer better for Positano?
In season the ferry, for two reasons: it costs a fraction and it arrives at the beach in the lower town, closer to most hotels than a car can get. Choose the transfer for winter, for late arrivals, or if you are staying high above the centre.
How long does the drive take?
About an hour and fifteen minutes in normal traffic. In July and August the SS163 slows badly — a boat covers the same route unaffected.
Is there a bus from Salerno to Positano?
Yes, the SITA coach runs the coast road. It is cheap and scenic but slow, frequently full in summer, and awkward with luggage on the steps at either end.
