Path of the Gods from Salerno — the walk above Positano.
Seven kilometres along the cliff tops with Positano and the Li Galli islands below you the whole way. The walking is easy; getting to the trailhead from Salerno is the part that needs planning. Here is the route, the direction to take it, and the buses.
Seven kilometres above everything.
Not a hard walk. A high one, with the best view on the coast.
The trail starts at Bomerano (a hamlet of Agerola, roughly 630 m) and runs east along the mountainside to Nocelle, above Positano. Three to four hours at a normal pace, mostly level or gently descending, on stone and dirt paths. It is not technical and needs no equipment beyond proper shoes — but there are unfenced drops, so it is not the walk for anyone uneasy with heights.
From Nocelle you have a choice: the 1,700 steps down to Positano, which are genuinely punishing on tired legs, or the local bus down to the main road. Most guided groups take the bus, and there is no shame in that.
Do it west to east. Starting at Bomerano means the elevation works with you and the view opens ahead rather than behind. People who walk it the other way spend the day climbing and looking over their shoulder.
The walk is easy. The transport is the puzzle.
Bomerano is not somewhere you reach quickly from Salerno.
Independently: SITA bus from Salerno to Amalfi, then a second bus up to Agerola/Bomerano. Reckon on two hours each way and check the return times before you set off — the last bus down is earlier than you would like, and Nocelle is not where you want to be stranded.
Guided: the tour from Agerola handles the trailhead and the guide, which removes the harder half of the planning. You still need to get yourself to Agerola, so read the meeting point carefully when booking.
When to walk it: spring and autumn. In July and August the exposed sections are hot with no shade, and in winter the path can be slick and the views closed in by cloud. April to June and September to October are the window.

How long is the Path of the Gods?
About 7 km from Bomerano to Nocelle, taking three to four hours at a comfortable pace. It is mostly level or gently downhill if you walk west to east, which is the direction we recommend.
Is the Path of the Gods difficult?
Not technically — no scrambling, no equipment beyond good shoes. But it is high, exposed in places, and there are unfenced drops. Anyone uncomfortable with heights will not enjoy it, and it is hot work in midsummer.
How do I get to the Path of the Gods from Salerno?
